Common Uses
Mirtazapine is an antidepressant and it is used for the treatment of moderate to severe depression.
How to Take
Use Mirtazapine as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions. The usual starting dose for Mirtazapine is 15 mg once daily, usually at bedtime. Doses may be increased, following medical advice, every 1-2 weeks up to a dose of 45 mg. It may be taken with or without food.
Warning and Precautions
Patients, their families, and their caregivers should be encouraged to be alert to the emergence of anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, impulsivity, akathisia (psychomotor restlessness), hypomania, mania, other unusual changes in behavior, worsening of depression, and suicidal ideation, especially early during antidepressant treatment and when the dose is adjusted up or down. Families and caregivers of patients should be advised to observe for the emergence of such symptoms on a day-to-day basis, since changes may be abrupt. Such symptoms should be reported to the patient’s prescriber or health professional, especially if they are severe, abrupt in onset, or were not part of the patient’s presenting symptoms. Symptoms such as these may be associated with an increased risk for suicidal thinking and behavior and indicate a need for very close monitoring and possibly changes in the medication.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Mirtazapine , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include: coma, fainting, fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat, hair loss, hallucinations, seizures, severe or persistent dizziness, drowsiness, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting, tremor. Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.
Storage
Store Mirtazapine at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Mirtazapine out of the reach of children and away from pets.
Possible Side Effects
The side effects are: Abnormal dreams; abnormal thinking; constipation; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; flu symptoms; increased appetite; weakness; weight gain.
